Please join Lisa Brew (MG 2024) to learn about a student-driven community farm
education program where students problem solve during authentication learning and
community collaboration, so that they become productive citizens in our community.
Lisa is a Master Gardener at AgInnovation and also works directly with the students
who run the farm.
Participants will learn about the origin of and vision for AgInnovation Farm located in
Portsmouth, RI. The AgInnovation Farm is a student volunteer-run farm where children
learn about sustainable agriculture with hands-on problem-solving experiences. It is
located at Slate Hill Cattle Company on Jepson Lane in Portsmouth and is a partnership
between the Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District (ERICD) and the Portsmouth
School Department.
Master Gardeners who attend the class will see these features on the tour:
Micro-clover patch plantings
Pumpkin patch
Community garden area
Strawberry patch/ blackberry & raspberry bushes
No till garden rows
Hugelkultur rows
SHT- seasonal high tunnel and plantings
Orchard
Food forest
Perimeter blueberry bushes
Farm animal areas
The walking difficulty is moderate.
Parking: There is a sign posted at the entry to mark the AgInnovation farm, as the land
is shared with the Slate Hill Cattle Company. It is just across the street from the
electrical station. Cars can park on the grass just in front of the schoolhouse (on the left
as you drive in).
